I’ve been organizing Startup Meetup Helsinki together with Kai Lemmetty since March 2012. We started it as a monthly get-together for people in and around the Helsinki startup scene to casually meet each other, hear interesting stories and network. (We really just wanted an excuse to have a few beers in a company of entrepreneurially-minded folks :)
It hasn’t been that long since March but the events are going strong. Our Meetup in August attracted a good 70+ people and we had a discussion on stage with Jori Lallo and Karri Saarinen from Kippt about their experience in Y Combinator. Brilliant guys from The Kick Network shot a beautiful video of the whole shebang (embedded below)!
Our September meetup is right around the corner and this time on top of some prime networking opportnities we’re putting together a panel discussion. The topic is something all start-ups can relate to - funding: how to get it and what to do with it once you have it.
Greg Anderson from ArcticStartup will lead the discussion between Ville Vesterinen (CEO @ Grey Area), Jani Penttinen (CEO & Founder @ Transfluent) and Antti Hannula (COO & Co-founder @ Appgyver). All the companies closed substantial funding rounds: Grey Area raised close to €2M in early 2011, Transfluent quietly raised funding last December and AppGyver stirred news-deprived July by announcing their €1M round.
Needless to say, the seasoned panelists will have a thing or two to say about money and startups!
Most importantly, though, we hope to preserve the spirit of the Meetup: casual, laid-back atmosphere where new connections are made and professional networks thrive. At the end of the day, it really is not about the money ;)
